Navigating Whole30: A Journey to Understand Your Body and Prioritize Health

I just started my 3rd Whole30 on March 1, 2024. If you aren’t familiar with Whole30, it’s a diet reset, where you eliminate several foods from your diet for 30 days and then slowly add foods back in to see how your body responds to those foods. The eliminate list is pretty long:

  • sugar, real or artificial

  • dairy, cow, goat or sheep

  • grains

  • most types of legumes

  • alcohol

  • carrageenan or sulfites

  • no baked goods, junk foods, or treats with approved ingredients

Wow, that’s so restrictive! What can you eat on Whole30?

  • meat

  • seafood

  • eggs

  • natural fats

  • herbs, spices, and seasonings

I am doing Whole30 this time around to test out my sensitivity to dairy products. I have been wondering for a while if my body isn’t liking me consuming dairy, so this is a great way to test that. By not consuming it and a host of other foods that may be causing my body to not operate at its best, I can really hone in on the foods that I should and shouldn’t eat.

If you have been following along my journey, you know that in my quest for balanced living, my physical health is one area that I have been working on for the past year. While I wish that restoring my physical health to an optimal state would have happened in that year, I need to remind myself that I didn’t get unhealthy in one year; it was 20 years of yo-yo dieting, seasons of healthy eating, and seasons of really poor eating. It’s going to take longer than a year to regain my physical health. And, I’m in it for the long haul. I’m doing this so I can be able to play with my future grandkids.

Thinking About Your Physical Health:

As I navigate through my health journey, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your physical health. Ask yourself:

  • Am I taking the necessary steps to understand my body's needs?

  • What are the signs and signals my body is giving me?

  • Have I considered dietary adjustments to enhance my well-being?

Remember, our bodies are unique, and what works for one might not work for another. It's about finding the right balance that suits you.

Prioritizing Your Health Journey:

Taking steps towards better health is a journey, not a destination. Consider these gentle yet impactful steps:

  • Self-Reflection: Take a moment to journal about your health goals, acknowledging both your strengths and areas for improvement.

  • Small Changes: Instead of overwhelming yourself with drastic changes, start small. It could be adding more water to your daily routine or incorporating an extra serving of vegetables.

  • Seek Support: Share your health goals with a friend or family member. Having a support system can make a significant difference.
