Life can be a whirlwind of responsibilities, especially for those of us who wear many hats. As a wife, a mom, and a follower of Jesus, I spent 22 years working in a church, pouring my heart and soul into my job. However, as the years passed, the weight of my responsibilities began to take its toll, and I found myself facing burnout. It was a wake-up call that led me on a transformative journey toward finding balance and rediscovering joy in everyday life.

I remember the exact moment when I realized I had reached my breaking point. The long hours, the emotional demands, and the constant sense of urgency had drained me to the core. My passion for serving others remained strong, but I had neglected to care for myself adequately. Burnout had taken hold, leaving me physically exhausted and emotionally depleted.

Recognizing the need for change was the first step towards healing. I made the difficult decision to step away from my role at the church, allowing myself the space and time to breathe and restore my well-being. It was a daunting leap of faith, but I knew deep down that I needed this break to find balance again.

One of the first things I did after quitting my job was to spend more time outdoors. Nature has a remarkable way of healing the soul. Whether it was taking leisurely walks on the boardwalk in Pismo, simply sitting by the beach, or lounging on the back deck at my home, I found solace and tranquility in nature. These moments of serenity allowed me to reconnect with myself and gain a fresh perspective on life.

My faith in Jesus Christ has always been a cornerstone of my life. During this period of renewal, I turned to my Bible for guidance and comfort. I immersed myself in scripture, finding strength and encouragement in the teachings of Christ. While praying and meditating on God’s Word were already integral parts of my daily routine, having more time to dig deeper has brought me closer to God and has helped me find peace amidst the chaos.

Isolation can exacerbate burnout, so I made it a point to reach out to friends and family regularly. I rekindled old friendships and deepened existing ones. Engaging in meaningful conversations and shared laughter proved to be a powerful remedy for the weariness I felt. Having a strong support system has bolstered my resilience and reminds me that I am not alone on this journey.

Neglecting self-care had been a significant factor contributing to my burnout. I am learning to prioritize myself without guilt. Whether it is making daily exercise a priority, getting a facial, or curling up with a good book, I am making time for activities that nourish my mind, body, and spirit. Self-care has become a non-negotiable part of my daily routine, and I am witnessing positive changes in my overall well-being.

In the midst of my journey to healing, I found myself exploring new interests and hobbies. I signed up for a marketing class, discovered a love for gardening, and even tried my hand at writing (hence this blog). Engaging in these creative pursuits brings me joy and has helped me uncover hidden talents that had remained dormant for too long.

Learning to set healthy boundaries has been a crucial aspect of my recovery. I realized that I couldn't do everything for everyone, and it was okay to say no when I needed to prioritize my well-being. Establishing these boundaries allows me to manage my time more effectively and ensures that I have the space to focus on what truly mattered.

As a recovering perfectionist, I had to confront the idea that balance does not equate to perfection. Life will always have its ups and downs, and that is okay. Embracing imperfection allows me to release the pressure to be flawless and instead focus on progress and growth.

My journey from burnout to balance has been both challenging and transformative. Quitting my job, spending time in nature, nourishing my faith, and cultivating meaningful relationships were instrumental in helping me rediscover joy and wholeness in everyday life. I don’t think I have arrived, but I’m also learning to enjoy the journey. It's okay to prioritize myself and engage in self-care without guilt. As I continue on this path of balanced living, I am grateful for the lessons I have learned, and I hope that my experiences can inspire others to find harmony and joy in their own lives. Remember, you are worthy of love, care, and balance. Take the first step on your journey today and embrace the beauty of a life lived in harmony with yourself and the world around you.

I love this post! Thank you for being "real" about how we often get everything else in life handled/taken care of but end up becoming more and more depleted along the way...often without even realizing. So many of us have been in, or are in, that type of "season". Thank you for the reminder that we need to be deliberate about seeking and creating a realistic and healthy life balance.
