Are you already feeling it? That feeling of overwhelm? We’re just two weeks into the new year, and I’m already feeling like I have too much on my plate to get it all done. Between my job(s), my home, my relationships, and helping my son and his fiancee plan their summer wedding, I feel a bit like I’m on a hamster wheel and I can’t get off. However, there are some things we can do to help us fight those feelings and ground us as we navigate our busy lives.
Nurturing Daily Moments of Stillness
As I have mentioned in previous posts, I’m all about establishing habits. One habit that really grounds me and reminds me of who I am, is my morning devotional time. It can be as short as a couple of minutes, or as long as you have. This year, I am reading through Paul David Tripp’s New Morning Mercies. It has a short devotional to read (usually less than 5 minutes) and then a few Bible verses to read (less than 2 minutes). You could also pick a plan to read with the YouVersion Bible App. Just taking some time in the morning to remind yourself that God is in control, that He loves you, and giving your day and tasks to Him can really change your mindset and consequently, the direction of your day.
Incorporating Spiritual Practices into Daily Tasks
Another way to foster this connection with the Lord is to use the time you are doing housework to pray and praise. Thank the Lord for his provision of dishes to wash, clothes to launder, and a home to clean. Put on worship music or listen to a podcast as you are doing these tasks. These little moments of acknowledging God will help foster your connection to the Lord and help give you peace. As you leave your home to go to work or run errands, listen to worship music, a podcast, or just someone reading the Bible.
Building a Supportive Spiritual Community
Having someone to share my feelings of overwhelm with has been crucial. Sometimes when I share what I’m overwhelmed about, a friend can help me see areas where I can delegate or delete things from my to-do list. Friends can also help you stay focused on the most important things. For this reason, I have a few friends that I am very transparent with, that I make a point of spending time with each month. I also have a group of women that I do a Bible Study with each week, and they also provide support and encouragement to me when I am feeling overwhelmed. Studying God’s Word together helps us all stay focused on who He is, and to encourage one another and pray for one another.
Spiritual grounding in the midst of chaos is not only possible but transformative. While these practices won’t reduce the items on your to-do list, they will reduce the stress associated with them. Embrace the simplicity of these practices and remember that in the sacredness of the everyday, you can find a deeper connection with God. I’d love to hear from you, so please share your own experiences and tips for staying grounded in Christ in the comments, so we can learn from each other.
